During the 1960s, American Motors in a quest to match other players produced a wide range of products. Sales being strong during the 1960s with healthy profits being posted year after year gave more impetus to this quest. Huge profits in the decade gone by, American Motors purchased the Kaiser-Jeep Corporation from Kaiser Industries in 1970. American Motors was thus successful in adding to its arsenal the jeep brand of light trucks and SUVs. It also got hold of Kaiser-Jeep's profitable government contracts. American Motors reconstituted the military and special products ventures as American Motors General Products Division. This was later renamed as AM General. AM General participated in the development of a new High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle for the military. This was the launch of the HUMVEE. In 1983, AM General was awarded a contract for 55,000 HUMVEES. Production for the HUMMER M998 began and a civilian model was introduced in 1992.
The primary function of the engine is to transform gasoline into motion. Internal combustion generates motion from gasoline by burning gasoline into the engine. The internal combustion gasoline engine runs on a combination of air and gasoline. Air enters the engine via the air cleaner up through the throttle plate. The gas pedal can be used to control the quantity of air passing through the throttle plate into the engine. From here air is supplied to all the cylinders through different passages. Another name for these passages is intake manifold. Depending on the kind of engine, an appropriate quantity of fuel is added to the air-stream by fuel injection system.
Majority of the AM General engines today are four-stroke, spark-ignition internal combustion engines. The four strokes are intake, compression, power and exhaust. When the piston travels downwards on intake stroke it leads to the opening of the intake valve. This draws the fuel-air mixture into the cylinder. As the piston reaches to the bottom of the intake stroke, the intake valve closes. In the next instance, the piston moves in an upward direction that leads to the compression of trapped air fuel mixture. This causes the spark plug to fire resulting in the ignition of the compressed air fuel mixture. A great force because of the combustion process pushes the piston down the cylinder. This leads to the turning of the crankshaft that generates power to drive the jeep.
