AMC has used many different transmissions in their vehicles form automatics to manuals. The Borg-Warner M11 and M12 and the Torquef Flite 727 and 904's are the most common automatic transmissions found behind AMC engines. While the Borg Warner transmissions are found in the earlier cars, the Torque Flites are found in '72 and later cars. The most popular manual AMC transmission is the Borg-Warner T10. This was used from '66 until the early seventies. The T10 was available with different gear ratios.

There is a need for AMC cars to have transmissions because of the configuration of the gasoline engine. The engine always has a maximum rpm above which it cannot go without blowing up. Engines have narrow rpm where horsepower and torque are at their maximum. The function of the AMC automatic transmission is to allow the gear ratio between the engine and the drive wheels to change as the speed of the AMC car changes (speeds up or slows down). One needs to shift gears so that the engine can stay below its maximum rpm. This will also ensure that it stays near the rpm band of its best performance.

The AMC rebuilt automatic transmission is one of the most complicated mechanical components in the AMC car. It contains mechanical systems, hydraulic systems, electrical systems and computer controls. These all work in perfect harmony to ensure a smooth run of the AMC vehicle. The AMC rebuilt automatic transmission is responsible for sending the power from the engine to the drive wheels. The AMC automatic transmission's function is to deliver power to the wheels keeping the engine running between its best rpm range. The automatic transmission of a rear wheel driven AMC car is placed at the back of the engine. The rear of the rebuilt automatic transmission is connected to the final drive in the rear axle by a drive shaft. The sequence of power flow is pretty simple on this system. It goes straight from the engine to the torque converter through the transmission and drive shaft to the final drive. From here after splitting it is sent to the two rear wheels.

In the case of a rebuilt AMC automatic transmission each part after being inspected for wear and tear is cleaned in a special cleaning solution. The torque converter is replaced with a remanufactured one. After replacing all seals and gaskets it is checked to see if any modifications are required for design defects. At times AMC automatic transmission rebuilt kits are available to resolve design defects.

Our site specializes in making AMC rebuilt and remanufactured automatic transmissions. This aids in improving the torque performance to enhance more horsepower.
