The Chrysler variable metering device known as the expansion valve varies refrigerant flow based on the cooling demand. When the demand increases, the valve opens wider. This allows it permit more refrigerant into the evaporator. The valve opening gets reduced to decrease flow when the demand has been satisfied. A sensing bulb mounted near the evaporator monitors the cooling demand.
