GMC was not always a part of General Motors. It was in fact an independent company. Its primary responsibility was looking into the development of some of the earliest commercial trucks ever to have been manufactured. It was known earlier as the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company formed by Max Gabrowski.

General Motors bought the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company in 1909. The company has since then been into manufacturing commercial vehicles for General Motors. Its name was change to General Motors Truck Company. It was from this the brand GMC Truck was coined. 1912 onwards the commercial vehicles manufactured by the company bore the name "GMC Truck". From 1996 the word "Truck" was removed and the vehicles were simply called GMC.

There were a lot many changes on the name of the GMC division and on its products, too. The one thing which was steady was the uniqueness and general individuality of its products. Since the start, the GMC vehicles had a reputation for toughness, power and performance. Up until now, the same features hold the GMC vehicles in good stead.
