The Mini came into public limelight for the first time on 26th August 1959. The Mini was designed by Sir Alec Issigonis as simply an affordable car to seat four adults and yet small enough to travel in safety. The 1960s are considered to be the memorable evolution years for the Mini. International stardom on the rally scene made it into a must have fashion accessory. In 1961 the first Mini Cooper hit the roads while it was the Cooper S which achieved superstar status. There was a time in the sixties when everybody wanted a Cooper. The 1970s was the dark era of the Mini. The 1980s was witness to desperate attempts by its new owners, Rover, to keep its head above water. The best change happened in 1997. The Mini was introduced with the twin-point injection engine with a front mounted radiator along with safety features such as airbag and side impact bars in the doors.
The Mini cooling system temperature is maintained by the thermostat. When the Mini engine is cold, the thermostat stays closed and keeps coolant from flowing through the radiator. This helps the Mini engine to warm very quickly. With an increase in temperature of the coolant, the valve in the thermostat opens slightly. This allows some of the coolant to flow through the Mini radiator. The Mini thermostat opens more in proportion to the heat of the coolant. The Mini thermostat is a very critical component of the engine's cooling system. A faulty thermostat can lead to overheating of the engine resulting in poor fuel economy. Replace as soon as you feel there is a knocking or pinging when accelerating or overheating as a result of the thermostat not opening.
A bad Mini water pump can also cause overheating. The Mini water pump is necessary for circulating coolant throughout the car's engine. In case of the water pump not functioning, the engine coolant will just sit in the block and heads without getting delivered to the radiator. The heat will therefore not be exchanged and no cooling provided by the radiator will result in overheating. This overheating can have consequences such as warped heads, blown head gaskets apart from lots of wear and tear.
